The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted, by consensus, a resolution addressing the ongoing Rohingya crisis, calling for renewed global efforts to secure a durable solution and ensure the safe and voluntary return of Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar.

The resolution, jointly tabled by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU), was co-sponsored by 105 countries, according to a statement from the Bangladesh mission to the UN in New York.

Adopted annually since 2017, the resolution highlights serious concerns over persistent human rights violations in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, targeted persecution of the Rohingya community, restrictions on humanitarian access, and the continued influx of displaced Rohingyas into Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries.

It further calls for sustained international engagement to guarantee the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland.

Following the adoption, Bangladesh’s delegation expressed appreciation to member states for their continued support but conveyed disappointment over the lack of meaningful progress during the past eight years in facilitating the return of the displaced population. The delegation emphasized that Bangladesh can no longer shoulder the responsibility of hosting approximately 1.3 million Rohingya refugees and urged urgent international measures to support their repatriation to Myanmar.

The resolution underscores the ongoing international concern over the humanitarian and human rights situation of the Rohingya community and signals a collective call for concerted diplomatic and practical efforts to resolve the crisis.
