The 97th anniversary of birth of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children’s Day was celebrated at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC.
On this day back in 1920 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest son of the Bengali nation, was born at Tungipara in Gopalganj district.
The messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and
State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out by the embassy officials. Verses from the Holy Books were recited followed by a special prayer seeking divine blessings for the late lamented leader and peace and progress of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Mohammad Ziauddin gave welcome address and Eng. Mizanur Rahman Majumder took part in the discussion. A documentary on the life and work of the Father of the Nation was screened.
Paying rich tributes to the Bangabandu, Ambassador Ziauddin in his statement said the 17th March is a glorious and significant day of nation’s history as Bangladesh emerged as an independent and sovereign nation because of Bangabandhu’s relentless struggle and uncompromising leadership against the military dictators of the erstwhile Pakistan.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1996 declared the 17th March as National Children’s Day to mark Bangabandhu’s unflinching love and affection for children and build up new generation imbibed with the ideals of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
A documentary film depicting life and work of the Father of the Nation since his early life, Language Movement in 1952, the War of Liberation in 1971 and the reconstruction of post-independence Bangladesh was screened.
