Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the brutal murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin in Chaurasta area of Gazipur city.

The police have been conducting raids since early Friday (August 8) and have arrested the five people.

Gazipur Metropolitan’s Basan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shaheen Khan said that five people have been arrested from different areas of Gazipur in connection with the public stabbing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin. Different police teams arrested them from different areas. Their identities are not known yet.

Earlier, the incident, which took place around 7pm on Thursday, has sparked outrage among local journalists. On Friday afternoon, journalists in the district formed a human chain demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved.

According to the police, a case was filed on Thursday night by the victim’s brother Md Selim, accusing 20 to 25 unidentified individuals.

Tuhin, a staff reporter for Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, was hacked to death in public by a group of armed men. The attack occurred after an altercation broke out between a man and a woman near the Chourasta area. The attackers, reportedly known to the woman, initially targeted the man, identified as 35-year-old Badsha Mia, who is currently receiving treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Hospital.

While recording the altercation on his mobile phone, Tuhin drew the attention of the attackers. CCTV footage revealed that they confronted him and demanded he delete the video. When he refused or denied recording it, the attackers assaulted him fatally, said GMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Rabiul Islam.

Tuhin was originally from Bhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh and lived with his family in Gazipur’s Chourasta area.

In a related incident, two individuals have been detained for allegedly assaulting another journalist, Anwar Hossain Sourav of Dainik Bangladesh-er Alo. He was reportedly beaten in front of police officers on Wednesday, apparently due to news reports linked to extortion.Newspaper classifieds
