European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller today expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to conduct a free and fair election, highlighting the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election as an opportunity for the country to demonstrate democratic resilience and counter global trends of democratic backsliding.

Emerging from a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal in Dhaka this morning, Ambassador Miller shared his observations and outlook regarding the electoral process scheduled for early next year. He emphasized that all stakeholders should focus on ensuring that the elections are credible, transparent, and professionally administered.

Ambassador Miller noted, “This is a moment for Bangladesh to reset its narrative and reputation internationally by demonstrating its capacity to conduct elections in a correct and professional manner.” He further highlighted that the upcoming polls present an opportunity to reinforce the country’s democratic trajectory and strengthen its international partnerships.

In response to questions regarding the preparedness of the Election Commission (EC) and the overall political environment, Miller expressed optimism. He observed that the commission is proactively addressing potential challenges, carefully planning for logistical complexities, and implementing measures to ensure smooth electoral operations. “The Election Commission is thinking ahead about all possible complexities on election day and is taking mitigating measures to address them,” he said.

The EU ambassador also drew attention to a recent mock exercise conducted by the EC to test readiness for the combined parliamentary election and a referendum on the July charter. He praised the commission’s advanced planning and logistical foresight, emphasizing the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by electoral authorities.

Highlighting EU support for the electoral process, Miller confirmed plans to deploy a substantial observer mission to Bangladesh. “We are preparing to send a large-scale observer delegation to witness what will be one of the largest democratic exercises of 2026 worldwide. This reflects our confidence in the process and our support for elections in this diverse country,” he said.

The ambassador acknowledged potential challenges in engaging voters, particularly a generation of citizens who have never participated in national elections. He stressed the importance of voter awareness and understanding of election day procedures, noting that logistical comprehension is critical for both the parliamentary polls and the referendum.

Earlier today, at 10:45 am, Ambassador Miller, accompanied by a four-member delegation, visited the office of the Chief Election Commissioner. The delegation included Deputy Head Baiba Zarina, First Secretary (Political) Sebastian Riger-Brown, and European Commission Policy Officer Jules Seitz.

Ambassador Miller reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting timely, participatory, and credible elections in Bangladesh, emphasizing that such engagement offers the country an opportunity to reinforce democratic principles and consolidate public trust in electoral processes. The European Union continues to encourage inclusive participation, effective administrative planning, and transparency to ensure that the 13th National Parliamentary Election proceeds smoothly and credibly.

With the election schedule yet to be officially announced, the EU delegation maintains active engagement with Bangladeshi authorities to monitor preparations, provide technical support, and facilitate a well-organized democratic exercise that aligns with international standards.

This engagement underscores Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to conduct credible elections, reflecting both domestic commitment and international support for democratic governance.
