Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today affirmed that there is no security threat to anyone in Bangladesh, emphasizing that the government is fully committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens.

Speaking at the Home Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat after a Core Committee meeting on law and order, Jahangir stated, “There is no security risk to anyone in Bangladesh. The government is fully prepared to ensure everyone’s safety. Special security arrangements will be provided for individuals who need them.” His remarks came in response to a question regarding potential security risks for BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman upon his return to the country.

Jahangir clarified that the meeting did not specifically focus on the security concerns of Tarique Rahman. Instead, discussions centered on preparations for the upcoming national election, maintaining law and order, controlling drug trafficking, monitoring the overall border situation, recovering looted firearms, and addressing provocative content on social media platforms.

He noted that the Home Ministry is actively preparing to protect all citizens, particularly in the context of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The meeting included deliberations on deployment strategies for law enforcement agencies, with attention to polling centers identified as potentially sensitive or high-risk. “We will deploy law enforcers after assessing the security of the polling centres,” he said, though he did not disclose the number of locations considered high-risk.

The Home Adviser also highlighted progress in procuring body-worn cameras for law enforcement personnel. When asked about the number of devices to be purchased, he stated, “We buy whatever we need,” indicating that procurement will match operational requirements.

In addition, Jahangir emphasized the importance of border security during the election period, directing relevant authorities to prevent unauthorized entry into Bangladesh territory. Addressing concerns about allegations of transfers of Superintendent of Police officers being politically influenced, he said no such complaints had been brought to his attention.

Regarding the implementation of recommendations from the investigation commission formed to probe the 2009 BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) carnage, Jahangir noted that he has not yet reviewed the full report but stressed the importance of executing the commission’s recommendations.

The Core Committee meeting underscored the government’s focus on election preparedness, law enforcement readiness, and citizen security, reflecting a comprehensive approach to maintaining stability and order in the lead-up to the national polls.
